The term “Underground City” refers to Montréal’s vast network of pedestrian walkways beneath downtown. Spanning 32 kilometres (20.5 miles), it connects métro lines, commuter trains, and buses. About 500,000 people use it daily, with shops, restaurants, hotels, offices, museums, theatres, and universities. The network began in 1962 with Place Ville Marie’s underground mall and expanded after Expo 67, making Montréal’s métro dream a reality.
