One of the main architects of the Confederation, Sir George-Étienne Cartier, politician, lawyer and businessman, was a pivotal figure in Canadian politics. His dedication to progress drove civil reform, industrialization and the development of transportation infrastructure, including the Victoria Bridge (inaugurated in 1859). The only Victorian interior open to the general public in Montréal, this site is comprised of two neo-classical houses with an adjoining coachway. The East House now features permanent exhibitions on Cartier's achievements. The West House has been restored to recreate the sumptuous bourgeois decor typical of the 1860s. Listen to the soundtracks playing in most rooms to learn some of the family’s most intimate secrets!
