Chalet du Mont-Royal

The Chalet du mont Royal, commissioned by then Mayor Camillien Houde and built in 1931 to offset unemployment during the Great Depression, was designed by Québec architect Aristide Beaugrand-Champagne in French Beaux-Arts and Arts and Crafts styles. Its stone façade has large windows and elegant doors. Inside the “Salle des pas perdus” (Hall of Lost Steps), paintings by thirteen Canadian artists, including Marc-Aurèle Fortin, Paul-Émile Borduas and Edwin H. Holgate, line the walls. Exposed beams with carved squirrels, chandeliers and a large fireplace complete the rustic décor. A food counter, boutique and information kiosk are also on site.
